Feral Friend #4 - Johnny Hartnell

Swim Feral has a few Feral Friends; extraordinary humans that approach life and their fellow swimmers with such massive love, support and inclusivity that we've sent them a Turtleback Bag. Next up, we'd like to introduce the darling Johnny Hartnell of the Dales Dippers.

Johnny was drawn to water from a young age.  Growing up in the Dales meant long days spent by the river, either fishing or swimming and subsequent years were spent climbing and caving in his beloved Yorkshire and beyond.

It's not surprising that he made a career from being outdoors. He has worked for Inglesport, an outdoor shop specialising in caving, climbing and more, for the past 25 years sharing his passion and expertise with other like-minded folk.

In the past few years though, the call of cold water has returned with a vengeance and he spends time immersed in rivers, pools and waterfalls most days.

His return to wild swimming led to meeting new friends Les and Stuart; they soon realised there were many people keen to swim who needed advice, information and local knowledge and formed the Dales Dippers, an outdoor swimming facebook group which now has almost 2000 members.

Johnny is usually found wearing a flat cap and drinking Yorkshire tea or a pint of best bitter, often in a river or lake, or failing that in his garden in a water filled wheely bin!
